Selecting The Right Breeder For Your New Puppy

When it comes to choosing the right breeder for your purebred dog there are a few little things you should keep in mind.

One of the first things you can do is make enquires at your local canine association or registered kennel club for your state or country, these places will have a list of all registered breeders for your chosen breed.

Once you have that list, ask around; many kennel clubs will have training days or similar where many of the dogs and breeders will be on display. Reputable breeders will be happy to give references, if you have friends or family that have purchased your chosen breed in the past speak to them about their experiences when dealing with the breeder they got their dog from.

When you speak to a breeder you may also be asked some questions, as they will want to make sure you fully understand what is involved with owning a particular breed - some breeds have very specific requirements when it comes to their care. They may also want to ensure you have enough room to maintain your dog, whether you can afford to both purchase your puppy initially and then continue to pay for all its needs.

A good breeder will also have made sure the parents of the puppies were breed surveyed and meet the required standards, will have the pups vet checked for any potential health problems, of course this is not a guarantee your pup will be healthy all its life as some things cannot be detected. Some breeds of dog are more likely to encounter certain defects (hip dysplasia for example) and if your pup is diagnosed with this after purchase breeders will often offer a refund; and while these types of defects are often genetic, breeders try to be selective in their breeding to limit the chances but it can still happen.

You may also want to speak to your vet or the vet the breeder uses for any further information, both in regards to what is involved in the care of your dog and for any information they can supply in regards to your chosen breeder.

By doing a little research before you purchase your puppy you can save yourself a lot of trouble later on.
