Signs Of Ill Health In Your Dog

Vet Secrets

When it comes to knowing if your dog is unwell it often comes down to observing their behaviour. Unlike people your canine can not tells us he has an upset stomach or a sore leg, instead he shows us through his mannerisms or other indicators of ill health.

One of the first signs that your dog may not be feeling 100% is simply that is not as energetic as normal; lethargy, not wanting to jump around in your presence like he normally would, or taking longer to go from a laying to standing position can often be signs that something is not quite right: from a strained muscle to illness of some variety.

Many dogs will also go off their food, and not wanting to eat can be an indicator that something is wrong. While vomiting one or two times may not be a sign, continued vomiting or constant loose stool may be a sign of something more serious and should be checked by your vet.

If your dog continually itches in the one spot you should first take a closer look to check for fleas etc. A rash or other skin problems may be caused by certain allergies (fleas, food, grass etc) so it needs to be diagnosed professionally.

A discharge from your pets eyes or nose can also be an idicator that something is wrong.

While these are just a few signs of ill health in your pet, and at times there may be no indication at all, you as the owner are the best prepared to know if something is wrong; as you observe your dog on a daily basis you need to take note of any behaviour that is out of the ordinary and get him checked by a vet if you're concerned about anything.
